Toledo is a day trip from Madrid. We caught a local train and had no problems working out where we needed to be and when to get off the train. Down winding narrow laneways the sense of history is ever present. Ancient city walls have protected Christians and Muslims over the centuries, when they have each ruled Toledo and it’s surrounds.
Toledo is historic and famous for steel making, especially knives and swords. There are many shops selling both these items. We were very tempted to bring home a set of Toledo knives – but further travels prevented us doing so. Reason to go back to Toledo!
Toledo is also the Spanish home of extraordinary Damascene gold work. Shops showcase amazing examples of this black and gold craftsmanship, including plates, jewellery and small home wares. If you are looking for genuine hand-crafted Damascene, shop carefully. While there are more than 20 authentic workshops in Toledo, the volume on display suggests not everything could have been produced by hand by master-craftsmen.
